If you suffer with dry skin during the colder months you’ll know all about the importance of keeping your skin healthy during winter. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to help you skin feel more comfortable.
Why does my skin feel dry during winter?
Dry skin is especially common in the winter months, when the humidity level outside drops. When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly; this makes your skin feel dry and tight, and makes it look flaky. Many of us also spend more time inside in the winter and use indoor heating. Dry indoor air not only dries out your skin, it also dries out your mucous membranes, leading to dry, chapped lips, dry noses and dry throats
What can I do to help?
- Bathe in softened water. When you live in a hard water area, the mineral content of your water supply is very high. Not only will these minerals clog your pores and dry skin, water containing these will also not work too well with soap, leaving a film on your skin which is difficult to rinse away. Softened water does not have the mineral content of hard water so will not build up on your skin. Also, as soft water works far better with detergents than hard water, you can get a better lather by using half the amount of soap, body wash or bubble bath. Washing in soft water will leave your skin feeling smooth and silky often without the need for additional moisturisers.
- Drink more water. Whilst the jury is still out on an official link between dry skin and drinking water, there is no doubt that hydration starts from within. It is important for our overall health to drink plenty of water during the day but many of us do not drink enough. Make drinking water a pleasure by getting a drinking water installed in your home. It will remove any unpleasant flavours and odours leaving you with just pure, great tasting water.
- Use face and body moisturisers. The good news is that with a water softener, you will find that you need to use less body lotions and moisturisers than you would when bathing in hard water. This will definitely help keep the costs down at a time when you will need to be spending extra on beauty products.
